Presenting the Super-LoRa poster at The Things Conference in Amsterdam

I presented the Super-LoRa work at The Things Conference in Amsterdam in September 2025. The Things Conference is the largest annual gathering of the LoRaWAN ecosystem and IoT practioners, bringing together chipset vendors, gateway and network operators, solution providers, and end users. Presenting there put our results in front of the people who build and deploy LoRaWAN networks every day, rather than an academic audience alone.

What I Presented

The poster covered the full Super-LoRa story in a form suited to a short conversation at a booth:

  • The problem: LoRa is efficient for small sensor readings, but its low data rates limit AI-driven IoT applications that need to send larger payloads, such as crop images for disease detection.
  • The idea: Super-LoRa superimposes multiple payloads within the same transmission by exploiting LoRa’s tolerance to interference, increasing data rates by up to five times while keeping LoRa’s low power consumption and simplicity.
  • The evidence: results from a software-defined radio prototype and an indoor and outdoor measurement campaign across the KAUST campus, showing up to a 5x throughput improvement with a packet success rate above 90% in favorable channel conditions.

The Super-LoRa poster was shown alongside two other KAUST Communication Theory Lab posters on LoRa ranging and on space-air-ground-underground LoRaWAN networks, which gave visitors a broader view of the group’s IoT research.

Why This Venue Mattered

Most of the questions I received were about adoption rather than theory. Practitioners wanted to know whether Super-LoRa requires changes to the LoRaWAN specification, whether existing gateways can be upgraded in software, how the scheme behaves when link quality degrades, and what the added receiver complexity costs in practice. These are exactly the constraints that shaped the design, so the discussions confirmed that the work is aimed at the right problems and pointed to the details that matter most for a real deployment path.

The conference was also a direct channel to potential adopters. Talking to gateway and network operators clarified which deployment scenarios benefit most from higher throughput, and gave me a clearer sense of where the research can move from a validated prototype toward a product-ready feature.
